CONCEPT-TO-CREATION…
It all begins with an idea.
The process started with PRE Empire providing us with the front cover images of albums from Young Dolph’s extraordinary body of work. I became responsible for creating ‘right and left’ labels for the sides of each case. These designs had to compliment the original cover art. Then submitted to the label for approval. I learned a lot about CD inserts and album design from this.
I don’t always know of the “how”, but I know of my ability to make it happen. The overall scope of work was challenging and almost impossible trying to gain assistance from professionals skilled in the construction of plexiglass. I’ll be honest…I don’t believe they understood the assignment, but I trusted their input on how challenging it would be to build 8 closed cases and 1 articulating case within the allotted timeframe.
I ordered all the material and once it was delivered, I got to work. I had to solvent weld each side of the case together. Apply the vinyl inserts and make 8 cases mountable for display. For the articulating case, I had to make a few risky cuts in the plastic to have the case open and close. I also took it a step further and created an actual CD-ROM as an addition to the nostalgic feel of snapping a CD in or out of its case (as shown in the video below). Overall, the opportunity was an honor to fulfill. All the pressure was worth the end product.
Long Live Dolph.
